DESIGNCOMMOTION

It’s May and that means ICFF brings cutting-edge design to Manhattan’s Javits Center. Among this year’s offerings will be this sexy dimpled cabinet designed and built by Bart Niswonger and Carl Schlerman of Studio Cochineal in Easthampton, Massachusetts. What will you miss if you don’t go? You’ll find it here. Artist/Rug Designer Michelle Weinberg reports on ICFF 2007.

Who knew, bamboo?

Every month, we’ll highlight a new eco-friendly product. This month, it’s EcoTimber’s woven bamboo flooring. Grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers, this product can be sanded and refinished just like hardwood. Shown in Amber (top left) and Honey (bottom left), woven bamboo is significantly harder and more stable than many tropical hardwoods. Visit EcoTimber’s website  to learn more about the material, which is made with a Low-VOC adhesive that meets European E1 standards for indoor air quality.

Screening McDreamy

One of DesignCommotion.com’s favorite designers, Kenneth Cobonpue, takes a starring role in Patrick Dempsey’s new film “Made of Honor,” which opens nationwide on Friday, May 2. (Well, it’s not Kenneth himself, but his C U C Me screen, shown in this still from the movie behind the equally delicious Dr. McDreamy.)

Hive debuted at the Cebu International Furniture Fair and took home an award for Best Accessory in the Professional Category for its Cuckoo Floor Lamp. Not resting on their lauded creativity, the company’s designers have come up with the awesomely gritty Bad Hair Day fixture (left), which would make even Medusa feel right at home in her surroundings. Hairspray anyone?

If you’re a Wendell Castle fan (and who’s not), you’ll want to make haste to Barry Friedman Ltd. in New York to see the American designer’s new work (from May 1 to June 21).

HOW ARE WE DOING? A BLOG ENTRY IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS!

Contributing editor James Duncan’s column debuts this month with his reflections on the Paris flea market. In the coming months, he will explore such subjects as the cultural history of the color blue, and links between haute couture and interior design. We can’t think of a better arbiter of the worldly aesthetic, as James lived in metropolises throughout North America, Asia and Europe before moving to Miami in 2003. The principal of The James Duncan Collection, he designs furniture and rugs with his wife Miriam.
